Marilyn Higgs, a native and long-time resident of Omaha, Nebraska, now lives near Hayward,WI and is associated with the Art Beat gallery in Hayward, WI and The Firefly Trading Company in Cable, WI. Her work is hanging in offices and homes on at least five continents. She has won numerous prizes and awards.
The artist’s current interest is in watercolors and collage but in the past she has also worked in oils and ink and made her own paper. Marilyn has taught watercolor painting to both adults and children. She has also conducted workshops on watercolors and collage.
The landscapes and farmsteads in her watercolors reflect the beauty she sees in rural America. Her impressionistic still-lifes, florals and collages have been used by decorators in both traditional and contemporary settings. Her geometric-inspired abstracts are surprising unless you know about her background in mathematics and computer programming. Her collages include her own hand-made, hand-painted, decorated papers as well as found papers and other found objects.
Thoughts on painting...
One of the great pleasures of painting is the dialogue that occurs with my art work and how I react to its response. I have never been able to do the thumbnail sketches or the preliminary drawings so often recommended. I prefer to let the painting evolve resulting in constant revisions to correct problems and the subsequent interaction and intuitive response.
